Microneedling
Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure that involves using fine needles to create micro-injuries in the skin. The procedure is performed with a device known as a derma roller or microneedling pen, which has a rolling drum or array of needles. These micro-injuries trigger the body’s natural healing response, which leads to the production of collagen and elastin, the proteins responsible for skin firmness and elasticity.
When microneedling is performed on the face, the tiny punctures made by the needles are designed to penetrate the skin at a depth of 0.5 to 2.5 millimetres. This promotes skin rejuvenation by stimulating the production of new skin cells and enhancing the skin’s natural ability to retain moisture. The increased production of collagen and elastin helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as improve the overall texture and tone of the skin.
Microneedling can be used to treat a variety of skin concerns, including acne scars, hyperpigmentation, large pores, and skin laxity. It can also help to improve the overall appearance of ageing skin. The procedure is typically performed after the skin has been cleaned and numbed, and takes anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the size of the treatment area.
Benefits of Microneedling
Microneedling has a number of benefits for the face, including:
- Stimulation of collagen production: Microneedling triggers the body’s natural healing response, which leads to increased production of collagen and elastin, the proteins responsible for skin firmness and elasticity. This can help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and improve the overall texture and tone of the skin.
- Reduction of scars and hyperpigmentation: By creating micro-injuries in the skin, microneedling can stimulate the production of new skin cells, which can help to reduce the appearance of acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and other skin imperfections.
- Improvement of skin laxity: As we age, our skin naturally loses elasticity and firmness. Microneedling can help to improve skin laxity by stimulating the production of collagen and elastin, which helps to tighten and firm the skin.
- Minimization of large pores: Large pores can contribute to a rough, uneven skin texture. Microneedling can help to reduce the appearance of large pores by promoting the production of new skin cells and tightening the skin.
- Enhance penetration of skincare products: By creating micro-channels in the skin, microneedling allows skincare products to penetrate more deeply into the skin, providing more effective results.
It’s important to note that results from microneedling may vary depending on the individual and the severity of their skin concerns. While microneedling is generally considered safe and effective, it’s important to seek treatment from a licensed professional to minimize the risk of complications. As with any cosmetic procedure, there may be some redness, swelling, and mild discomfort following the treatment, but these side effects are usually short-lived and can be managed with over-the-counter pain medications.
